STEM Complex Construction

STEM Building

A crucial component in the mission of a STEM education at TCNJ is to provide students with cutting edge facilities and state of the art technology to give them the hands-on experience they need to build successful careers. To further accomplish this, TCNJ recently built an 89,000 square foot STEM building as a resource for our students. The School of Engineering community is thriving while teaching and learning inside this facility!

This building is home to the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, as well as the School of Science’s Department of Computer Science. The facilities give students an interactive learning environment where they can cultivate their creativity. The building is designed to be conducive to collaboration with both professors and other students, allowing for research ideas to grow and questions to be answered in an open environment. For example, the building includes a faculty-student collaborative research suite, a high-performance scientific computing cluster with 300 servers, a biomedical engineering research suite, and a mechanical engineering design studio. The research suite component of the STEM building provides students with increased exposure to immersive research and engineering experiences.

Armstrong Hall

Armstrong Hall received a facelift in the final phase of TCNJ’s STEM Complex project. Before constructing the STEM building, Armstrong Hall was TCNJ’s primary engineering building. It housed all engineering disciplines, including iSTEM Education, and the School of Engineering had simply outgrown the space due to growth in the number of programs and the number of students. Armstrong Hall’s updated interior showcases glass walls, collaborative research and teaching spaces, and open study areas for students — the kinds of improvements that have led to steady increases in student participation in intensive, faculty-mentored research. The complete STEM Complex, including Armstrong Hall, behaves as a unified system for inculcating passion and collaboration.
