Dr. Al-Omaishi Earns Award Offered by ASCE

Dr. Nabil Al-Omaishi, P.E., Associate Professor and Chair of the Civil Engineering Department was the lead author of a two-part paper entitled “Estimating Prestress Loss in Pretensioned High Strength Concrete Members” and “Elasticity Modulus, Shrinkage and Creep of High Strength Concrete as adopted by AASHTO” that appeared in the Precast Concrete Institute, PCI Journal, in the issues of summer 2009 and fall 2009, respectively. The authors of these two papers have recently received the 2011 T. Y. Lin Award which is offered by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

The co-authors are Maher K. Tadros, Leslie D. Martin Professor, department of civil engineering, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska and Mr. Stephen J. Seguirant, vice president and director of engineering for Concrete Technology Corporation, Tacoma, Washington.

In these papers, Dr. Al-Omaishi summarized research work performed for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program, (NCHRP) which was fully documented in the NCHRP’s report no. 496. Subsequently, the main conclusions of this research work, which dealt with estimating prestress losses in pretensioned high strength concrete girders, were incorporated in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, AASHTO-LRFD Bridge Design Specifications.

This two-part paper was also the winner of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute’s, (PCI’s) Charles C. Zollman Award for 2010. This award recognizes that the paper published in the PCI Journal is the most “worthy of special commendation for its merit as a contribution in advancing the state-of-the-art of precast and prestressed concrete.” Dr. Al-Omaishi who also serves as a reviewer for several PCI Journal publications said “It is quite an honor to be recognized by your peers”.
