Dr. Brennan Presents at the 2017 ITS World Congress

Dr. Thomas Brennan, a professor in the Civil Engineering department, recently presented his research at the 2017 ITS World Congress.  Interim President and Chief Executive Officer of ITS America, David St. Amant, describes the event as a conference in which “thousands of people—academics, researchers, policymakers, businesses, entrepreneurs, investors,  implementers, and the media- from the transport, automotive, telecommunications, and technology sectors will gather to seek and share solutions in an attempt to address the very real challenges facing our mobile, connected societies today and in the future”. This event is held annually in different locations around the world, and gathers together an international community of scholars and innovators. Dr. Brennan contributed to the discourse at the conference with his research titled “Incorporating Speed Data to Analyze Evacuation Resiliency”, which he presented as a part of a session called “Application of ITS for Disaster Management”.

In an explanation of his research, Dr. Brennan states, “I am using vehicle speed data obtained from tracking anonymous probe vehicles across New Jersey. By tracking vehicle speeds along roadways, specifically along the coast, performance measures are developed to determine congestion patterns as well as the transportation system recovery after a natural, or man made, event.  For this particular research, I looked for the absence of normal congestion and the return of said congestion to determine network recovery after Hurricane Sandy”.
Dr. Brennan also shared his research with students and faculty as a part of the school’s Research Tuesday lecture series. In January, Dr. Brennan will expand on his research at a conference in Washington DC. Congratulations Dr. Brennan!
