The Center for Excellence in STEM Education Nominated for Groundbreaker Award

Chester A. Arthur School

The TCNJ School of Engineering is thrilled to announce that The Center for Excellence in STEM Education has been recognized for their work at Chester A. Arthur, a K-8 school in Philadelphia. The Center was nominated for the Delaware Valley Green Building Council’s (DVGB) 2017 Groundbreaker award. According to the DVGB’s website, this award is given to those who have “demonstrated commitment to sustainability in the built environment”. The Center for Excellence in STEM Education participated in creating an outdoor learning facility for the school. The curriculum largely focuses on the intersection of conservation and urban living. For example, the facility gives the students an opportunity to plant and tend an urban garden.  Each section of the facility concentrates on a different facet of environmentalism to actively engage students in sustainability issues. The facility’s greatest strength is that it takes complex topics and turns them into interactive learning experiences that are comprehensible for K-8 students.  In addition to the garden, the project includes a habitat lab and an ecological systems lab, both which encourage students to take an interest in the natural environment.
