On Wednesday, April 20th Dr. Hod Lipson held a talk in Mayo Hall at 11am. Dr. Lipson is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Columbia University and is known for his research on self-aware and self-replicating robots. He discussed the possibility of robots discovering scientific laws automatically, and outlined a series of recent research projects, starting with self- reflecting robotic systems, and ending with machines that can formulate hypotheses, design experiments, and interpreted the results to discover new scientific laws. Attendees saw examples from psychology to cosmology, from classical physics to modern physics, from big science to small science.
