Increased use of alternative energy sources in the power grid demands sophisticated measurement technology. Phasor measurement units (PMUs) have emerged as the necessary technology for power grid measurement.
The Smart Electric Power Systems Laboratory (SEPS) here at TCNJ needs this measurement technology for effective research; however, the cost of PMUs on the market extends to tens of thousands of dollars. This project is designed to build a PMU for only a few hundred dollars. The project will also include various options for monitoring the power lab through the PMUs, including a web application and exportable data. As a result of this project, the TCNJ SEPS Laboratory will be able to conduct important and modern research of the power grid.
