STEM Building Structural Design

The TCNJ STEM Building project is part of the STEM Complex project for which The College of New Jersey has recently received funding. A new building is to be constructed on TCNJ’s campus where Holman Hall currently stands to provide facilities for the STEM departments. The goal of the project was to design the structural framework for a building which will accommodate the space requirements of the engineering departments. A schematic layout of the 115,000 SF building was created to include all required space as described by the programming plans. Loads were determined using ASCE7-10. The frame of the building was modeled in IES Visual Analysis and appropriate loading was applied. Steel was selected as the building material due to relative ease of use. Design of the steel framework was completed in Visual Analysis using AISC Steel Construction Manual, 14^th edition. The final design includes over one million pounds of steel and over 2,000 CY of concrete, with an estimated material cost of over $1.5 million dollars.
