Tennis Court Area Flood Mitigation

The purpose of the TCNJ Tennis Court Area Flood Mitigation design project is to correct the flooding and runoff issues in two areas (by Packer Hall and the walkway from the towers to Eickhoff Hall) surrounding the TCNJ tennis courts. During average rainfall events there is ponding of rainwater, indicating inefficient rainwater remediation practices.  The analyses performed in Senior Project I included geotechnical and hydrological studies of the areas. The geotechnical analyses completed included determining the depth of the groundwater table, soil profile and soil properties, and a field permeability test. Three soil layers were identified with the first and third layers being granular and the second layer cohesive. The groundwater table was not detected. Hydrologic analyses included the delineation of the two separate watersheds, calculation of the total area of runoff, SCS regression, Rational, and the curve number methods. The watershed areas found were 14,000 square feet and 4,000 square feet. The project will conclude in Senior Project II with the design of three to four separate rainwater remediation techniques, one of which will be a sustainable design solution. One solution we will consider is redesigning the trench drain currently in place on the Packer Hall side of the tennis courts. Another design for the New Residence Hall side is pervious concrete with a gravel retention basin below the sidewalk. Ideally, at least one of these designs will be implemented in the affected areas.
