Typically the excellent professors in the School of Engineering’s Biomedical Engineering Program bring the world to the classroom for their students to study. However from October 7th to October 10th, ten students from the TCNJ Chapter of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) got the chance to travel to the national conference of the BMES to see the latest advances in the field. The Annual Fall Meeting of the Biomedical Engineering Society was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In attendance were BMES student chapter officers which include; Luis Martinez (President), Kamila Paluch (Secretary), Henry Talasan (Treasurer) and Smit Shah (Webmaster). Also in attendance were Scott Wentzell, Aaron Swedberg, Richa Lamba and Salam Al Omaishi.
Treasurer Henry Talasan explained that “the primary reason for me to go there was to see what BME encompasses beyond the walls of Armstrong and what I can do to prepare myself for the future.” Henry mentioned that this year they were fortunate that the meeting was relatively close to TCNJ, since next year’s meeting will be held in Austin, Texas. The students got the chance to gain insight into the true breadth of the field through the many platform and poster presentations that spanned the field. From molecular-level, to cellular level, to system level, the students were able to see how engineering is applied to medicine. They also heard from distinguished forum speakers who spoke on topics such as bioengineering therapies for sepsis, biological materials, cardiovascular devices, neuromodulation and neuroplasticity, stem cell bioprocessing etc . In addition to the scientific program, the students were able to network with other student chapters. Specific programs were offered for students that included resume building, industrial panel, and a student leadership panel for the officers of clubs.
Talasan stated: “I think the conference rose to my expectations and more. It was a very good experience that I personally think everyone that is serious about engineering should have.”
